Cold Pack for a Young Child
These child cold packs have covers with pictures from the classic Brown Bear, Brown Bear children’s picture book. You can also put pictures of family members. There are inserts filled with flax seed that can be kept cold in the freezer until needed. The back of the cover is a soft plush dark fabric that feels good on the skin and does not show stains easily.

Materials needed:
Cloth:
-Cotton printer fabric (computer printed photos)
-Brown Bear fabric (1 yard)
-White cotton fabric (1 yard)
-Brown soft plush thin fabric (1/2 yard)
Other:
-Thread: white cotton; brown cotton;
-Stuffing: flax seed
-Printed Pattern: printable here




 

Step 1: Pinning Plush Cloth to White Cloth

Pinning Plush Cloth to White Cloth:
-Place the plain white cloth rectangle on top of the plush cloth rectangle. (right sides together)
-Pin only along one short side.




 

Step 2: Pinning Picture Cloth to White Cloth

-Place the picture cloth rectangle on top of the plain cloth rectangle. (right sides together)
-Pin only along one short side.





 

Step 3: Stitching Pinned Cloth Together

Stitching Pinned Cloth Together:
-Stitch the pinned edges of the picture cloth pair and the plush cloth pair. (1/4 inch seam allowance)
-Trim thread and flatten seams open.





 

Step 4: Pinning 2 Sides of Cover Together

Pinning 2 Sides of Cover Together:
-Place the stitched picture cloth pair on top of the stitched plush cloth pair. (right sides together)
-Match the flattened seams and pin in place.
-Pin all four sides.





 

Step 5: Stitching 2 Sides of Cover Together

Stitching 2 Sides of Cover Together:
-Begin stitching at the short end without the picture. Start close to the right corner so that there will be 1 to 2 inches open for turning the cover later.
-Start with a 3/8 inch seam allowance on the plain cloth end. Change to a 1/4 inch seam allowance on the plush cloth end. Switch back to the 3/8 inch seam allowance to finish the plain cloth end.
-Continue stitching around all 4 corners, stopping at the plain cloth short end. Again make sure you have 1 to 2 inches open on that plain cloth short end for turning.





 

Step 6: Turning the Cover

Turning the Cover:
-Cut each corner diagonally so that the corners can be pushed out.
-Pull the right side of the cover out through the seam opening of the plain cloth end.





 

Step 7: Corners and Closing Seam

Corners and Closing Seam:
-Using a small blunt stick, push out all corners. (the wrong end of a crochet hook?)
-Fold the seam edges in on the opening of the plain cloth end.
-Iron the cover flat.
-Stitch the opening closed 1/8 inch from the edge.





 

Step 8: Turning and Tacking the Cover

Turning and Tacking the Cover:
-Push the plain cloth side of the cover into the plush side.
-Push the corners in with a small blunt stick.
-Using a needle and brown thread, tack the stitched end of the plain cloth cover to the brown cloth at the seam.





 

Step 9: Making the Insert

Making the Insert:
-Joining the short ends, fold and pin the rectangle. (cut from plain cloth)
-Stitch the right edge beginning at the right joined corner and ending at the folded corner. (1/4 inch seam allowance)
Stitch the left edge beginning at the left joined corner.
-Leave a 1 1/2 inch opening at the matched end.
-Trim the corners and turn the insert right side out.
-Iron the seams folding in the opening.
-Fill the insert with flax seed 2/3 rds full.
-Stitch the opening closed 1/8 inch from the edge.
-Keep the inserts in the freezer in a sealed plastic bag.
-Pull an insert out of the freezer and place inside a cover.
