Language Milestones/4-5 Years
- Learns new words quickly; Vocabulary of 1,500 – 6,000 words;
- Plays with words, imitates and creates sounds, and makes rhymes;
- Combines thoughts into one sentence; Converses with longer, more complex sentences; Sentence length of 4-6 words; Uses "because" and "so" to express causality;
Uses when and if; Uses sentences that have more than 1 action word;
- Uses past, present and future tense, mostly correctly; Uses some irregular past tense verbs;
- Use words like "can," "will," "shall," "should," and "might"; Uses “has”, “does”, “had”; Uses comparative adjectives ("small-smaller"); Uses these and those;
- Asks whose; Asks the questions “Do you want to...?”, “Are we going to ...?”, “Can you...?”; Uses does to ask yes/no questions;
- Names penny, nickel and dime;
- Understands the function and purpose of print; Knows many letter names;
