Cognitive Milestones/4-5 Years
- Listens while others are speaking, hearing and understanding most of what is said; Continues an activity for 11-12 minutes;
- Identifies and names many colors and shapes; Tells color of unseen object; Identifies and names letters and numbers; Counts objects up to 5; Repeats four numbers; Recognizes name in print; Knows own street and town;
- Matches and sorts objects; Categorizes, naming items without visual clues; Greater understanding of concepts of function or use of objects, time, and part/whole relationships;
- Understands spatial concepts, such as beside, behind, in front and next to; Understands different, nearest, through, thin, whole; Understands comparative and superlative adjectives, such as big, bigger, biggest;
- Follows three-step unrelated directions; Follows simple directions involving remote objects;
- Understands "in the morning" , "next", "noontime"; Understands time concepts yesterday, today, tomorrow, days of the week, last week, next week; Understands before and after; Understands first, then, next; Begins to relate clock time to daily schedule;

- Ask and answers “what”, “who”, "when", "how", and "why" questions; Answers “how many” questions (up to four); Understands complex questions;
- Identifies a problem and possible solutions, choosing the appropriate one(s); Shows an understanding of right and wrong;
- Plays dress-up; Dramatic play moves closer to reality, with attention to detail, time, and space; Speaks of imaginary or future things, such as “What if ...” or “I hope ...”;
